Dr. Roberts is certified in the Schroth Method for treating scoliosis.
What is the Schroth Method for Scoliosis?
The Schroth Method for scoliosis is a specific exercise program using a three dimensional approach to elongate the trunk and correct scoliotic posture. A Schroth trained physical therapist will develop individual exercises for their patients based on spinal curve patterns, risk of progression, bone maturity , pain , flexibility, respiration and strength . Sessions will include hands on care to help facilitate proper movement patterns as well as managing painful tissues at transitional areas as needed.
The Exercise Goals:
- Stabilization of the curve/s
- Mobilization of stiff body parts
- Improve postural alignment
- Teach activities of daily living
- Promote corrections
- Enhance neuromuscular control
- Increase muscle strength and endurance
- Reduce pain
- Improve Cardio-pulmonary function
- Assist in prevention of surgery
- Empower self care and management
Who would benefit from Schroth?
The treatment approach can use used to treat scoliosis patients of ALL AGES and can be utilized to treat in all stages of scoliosis, including after surgery and during bracing .
What are the exercises like?
Specific exercises are provided based on the curve patterns and severity, as well as the patient’s function and mobility. The goal is create awareness of the new posture and alignment through position, repetitions and breathing. Exercise positions may be modified in order to create the optimal position for the patient.
The Schroth therapist guides the patient with tactile stimulus so the patient has an understanding of where they need to breath and elongate to create muscle activation in to correct the curve.
